yes you can
but remember weed seeds will blow in and settle on top of your new lawn no matter what barrier you install.
and in the future when you try to dig in plants you may regret having the landscape fabric to deal with
Landscape fabric prevents weeds by blocking the sunlight the weed seeds need to germinate. Covering the soil with sod will accomplish the same thing.
No fabric is needed.
you can but you will still get weeds the buggers are air born for the most part.weed blocker is for putting down and adding a mulch on top to stop weeds from coming up.ask any one who has it down and they will tell you it eliminates a lot of weeding but you still have some to do.just follow a regiment of lawn care and your lawn will look great spring weed and feed midsummer fertilized with a turf builder.fall winter fertilizer.
Use newspaper. It will block the old long enough to kill most of them before it deteriorates. It won’t be a problem later.
Landscape fabric will not bother the roots. All the fabric does is inhibit weed growth. Keep in mind that the fabric is not a weed killer as well as keeping in mind that the weeds will show up regardless of the fabric. You are putting top soil and sod on top of the fabric, this is an open invitation to weed growth no matter what you do. Planting as you have described is pretty much a waste of both cloth and money and will serve no real purpose. Water will weep right through the cloth without a problem.
Folks who use the cloth usually put it down then put beauty bark or rocks or what-have-you on top of that, weeds are kept to a minimum this way. Plants are put through it by cutting holes in the cloth and planting the bushes in the holes: This does not work too well with grass.
There are those who will tell you “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah do it that way”, they obviously are not aware of the mechanics of root systems and how plants get from seed to mature plant. At this point I am going to ask you to remember back to your grade school science class; do you recall how it is that a seed can be placed on top of the soil and still take root? That is precisely what is going to happen in your freshly planted grass, the weed seed(s) are going to land and sprout on top of your grass burying it’s roots through the sod layer into your freshly spread soil that has been put on top of the cloth.
No you do not want to put down fabric under sod
It will not allow the sod to root as deeply and the weeds will germinate in the sod and soil anyway
Use a good pre-emergent followed by a fertilization program and spot treatment for weeds – best treatment for weeds is a healthy lawn
