Can You Grow A Columbine Plant Inside?
I was given Columbine seeds to plant, but I haven’t put them in a pot yet because I just don’t want them to go to waste because I’ve never grown them before. Is it safe to grow one inside? I know I’d have to put it in a window, but are there any specifics? I can’t place it outside because my neighbor is hording about 13-15 cats who ruin just about anything we put outside (in RI you’re allowed to have as many cats as you like. I know, RIDICULOUS). I don’t have anything against the cats, but they don’t know that I want to grow my plants! lol. Anyway, I would really like to grow these beautiful flowers. It’s still a bit chilly, but it is technically spring and I know that’s when they grow. Any advice about growing a Columbine plant inside is welcome (potting, the best soil to use, where to place the plant, etc…). Thanks!

use potting soil put in window with the most light and it should grow nicely. i have seven different kinds of Columbine growing outside
If you have a sunny, really sunny, window they will grow inside. I think the Miracle Grow soil with Moisture Crystals is the best.
They grow outside really well – I have some that have lived through the winter every year for 14 years. They will grow better outside. Acclimate them to the cold by putting them out for a few days (bring them in if it drops below 32), then you can plant them. Mine are in a partly sunny, well drained spot.
They are beautiful flowers. Good luck with them.
They prefer being planted in the ground, full sun. Biannual, won’t bloom first season, will bloom next year. You can try growing them inside, south window, doubtful of success indoors.
First of all, when you plant them, don’t use a fertilizer with water crystals. Once you have them in there, it’s hard to control the amout of hydration in the soil. If it starts to get too wet, your only way to fix it is to re-pot the plant in new soil. I wouldn’t recommend that. It’s just as easy to water it yourself. Always check at least 2 inches deep in the soil before each watering, to determine if it needs more water. Only water when it no longer feels damp. Columbines are use to dryer and cooler weather.
They also LOVE only a few hours of sun and lots of shade to get big. They are native to the rocky mountains, so keep that in mind.
Don’t plant them outside until the weekend after mother’s day – RULE OF A GREEN THUMB
I would recommend using a potting soil that contains vermiculite and fertilize with Osmocote. It’s a time release fertilizer that you can just sprinkle on the top of the soil and water it in.
Also, keep in mind that columbines can get to be very large plants, so dont plant the seeds too close together. If you want to plant them in small pots first, when they start to get large, they will need to be transplanted out side or in larger containers so that their roots have room to grow. Always make sure that your pots have plenty of drainage as well!
