Plant outside in sun or light shade, they will grow in both places. Scratch or loosen the soil lightly with a garden claw or rake. Sprinkle your seeds on and cover with the loose soil. You just cover with enough soil so that you cannot see the seeds…a light covering. Water with a very light spray/ mist of water. You can cover with mulch to help retain the moisture, but no more than a 1/4 inch. You will need to water every day, maybe twice a day if in the sun until the seedlings are about 6 inches high. Columbines are a perennial and are short lived plants but will reseed themselves. When the flowers are done blooming and you see the small pods where the flowers were, just give them a gentle shake every now and then to help the seeds to drop.
My wife agrees pretty much with Toby61565. Columbines reseed every year with no effort on our part. That means they only want a very slight covering of soil to germinate. Ours are in partial sun. Like most seeds, they benefit from being kept moist until they sprout and get established.
Start in seed starting mix. Transplant when 2nd second set of leaves emerge into sun/part shade area. They like soil to be a little more damp then other plants. I would not do window boxes. They can get quite tall.
Columbine seeds are very small so you do not really want to cover them with soil. Sprinkle them on the ground and and just gently press them into the ground. You can thin them out if they come up to thick. Keep the soil moist while the seeds are germinating. They almost look like clover when they sprout. Mine are in sun but sun to part shade would work also. I don’t know about a window box, it depends on the location of the box. AS far as how far apart that is really depends on the look you want, I like them in bunches but I see a lot of times where people space they about a foot apart. Whatever you do they will multiply and reseed them selves the second year.

something is attacking my columbines. The leaves are gone with just little stick stalks left. What can I use?
I have the same problem. Every time I get a little flush of leaves, they are immediately eaten by some pest. Need some help for my New York garden.
