Put three or four (4 to 6 inch) cuttings in small individual plastic pots. 4″ pots or even paper or plastic drinking cups would work (cut hole in bottom).
Use potting soil to give them a good start and keep moist but not wet in good light.
Transplant pot and all in spring when there is no more danger of frost. The pots will help stabilize the plants and prevent soil from being washed away while they are getting established.
Ivy will also root in water, just remove leaves from bottom two inches and put them in a jar of water, with the tops out..not full sun, but good light near a window..they’ll root. They’ll also root in the ground, plus if you have ivy growing thickly, you can probably find spots where branches have touched the ground and already started forming roots….if it’s not too cold where you are, you can plant 3 inches or so of branches in the ground, and keep watered, and shaded, and they’ll root.
ivy roots very easy from cuttings since you want it to spread fast the bigger the cuttings the faster it will spread.for the project you want. I would start with 1 foot cuttings 2-3 for every square foot if you can and stick them directly into good potting soil and keep them good and wet for a week then start to taper the water off to normal. i have found that plants rooted in soil do better. water rooted plants have more brittle roots that tend to break easier during transplanting. wen you transplant them make sure they are each pointing in a different direction. aslo dig you hole a little bigger than you need and fill the extra space with compost. unless the soil where you are planting is good already. start your cuttings as soon as it starts to warm up outside a good sign is that buds are starting to push green.
