I purchased several perennials this year. One of which is a Blue Columbine. What is the bloom season for it?
It’s thе tіnіеѕt baby аnd hаѕ hаd really nice foliage. I didn’t dilusion myself tο thinking іt wουld bloom thе first year bυt thе leaves аrе starting tο turn brown. Sο іѕ іt already dying back fοr thе summer οr dο I hаνе a problem? Whаt іѕ thе proper bloom season fοr Blue Columbine. I.e Summer, Spring ??
Thank уου I didn’t expect аnѕwеrѕ thаt qυісk! Wе dіd hаνе 3 days οf extreme heat. Perhaps thаt’s thе brown edges. I hаνе bееn trying tο water thеm (All 150 οf thе entire mixed perennial garden) 1 time іn thе AM аnd 1 time іn thе PM. Iѕ thаt tοο much water? I hаνе decent drainage аnd full sun.

The are late spring and yes, they may die back a bit……but since they are new guys, they may be suffering from heat or too much sun??? Try mulching and examine water habits…too much, too little. As they mature their bloom time extends.
I have some and they usually come out april to october just cut them down every year and they will be strong and more flowers should appear.
I am in CO, my columbines are just now blooming and they continue to bloom and stay green all summer if they are in partial shade. Yours shouldn’t be turning brown yet, and I wouldn’t fertilize them as new plants NO – they require very little fertilizer at all, and are very tender to all fertilizers. If left alone they reseed and new babies appear each spring. Don’t cut them back! Sounds as if yours is getting too much sun, not enough water.
Where do you have it planted? They bloom in late Spring where I am (Northeast) and they do very well in part sun/part shade.
Columbine are biennials which means they send up foliage the first year and flowers the second
I am in Montana and my columbines have barely started to bloom I have purchased a red on this year and it is still in a pot sometimes when they are still in the pot they dont like it and tend to die down a little bit but as soon as they go in the ground they will perk up and even sometimes will bloom later the first year just because they did not get in the ground on time. the columbines that i actuallly have self seed on a regular basis and sometimes even bloom twice in a year in the right area in the flower beds so dont be alarmed even if the plant dies back completely the roots should still be fine and because it being a perennial that why it should be just fine.(they are like weeds once you put them in the right place in the flower bed they pop up everywhere)
