I’m looking for something to plant on about 1/5 acres of bermed up area along the driveway… not a lawn necessarily, but something drought and cold resistant.

We get about 20′ish inches of rain a year, and winter lows below zero, tho not for extended times.

The summers can be hot (100) typically in the 80′s to mid 90′s.

Don’t want to water this stuff every other day, and would rather have something growing un-checked than a mowed carpet.

Any recommendations for something hardy, unique and functional would be great!

P.S.
Bunch grasses are common to the area.

Most of the forests in the Western United States have been altered to an unnatural condition by over a century of fire suppression and past timber harvest practices. The current condition of our forests leaves them vulnerable to disease and catastrophic fires. Many people believe that we need to lock up the forests to protect them from human activity. The problem with that idea is that this does not allow us to fix the problem and it leaves them in an endangered condition. Even though past forest harvest practices have contributed to the problem, responsibly harvesting forest products can also be a viable tool to restore our forests

Forest fires are a natural part of the forest ecosystem. Before the arrival of Europeans fires were started naturally by lightning. Native Americans would also start fires to improve hunting. Our western forests are naturally dominated by conifers which have thick bark that provides insulation that protects them from fire. In the past fires would periodically be ignited and creep along the forest floor. These periodic fires would benefit the forest by cleaning up the forest floor and burning much of the underbrush and small trees that would compete with the larger trees for water and nutrients. After a fire the large trees with their foliage held high above and out of reach of the flames were left widely spaced where they had plenty of room to grow in the nutrient rich layer of ash left by the fire. Out of this ash will sprout grasses and forbs that provide food for wildlife.

With the arrival of Europeans the Native Americans were displaced and they were no longer a source of igniting fires. Then early in the last Century we started putting out lightning fires. Without fires brush and small trees were able to grow and compete with the larger trees. Early in the last Century early explorers were able to ride their horses through our forests but now after a century of fire suppression the forests have grown so thick that it can now be difficult to walk through them. With so many trees competing for limited nutrients and water they are not as healthy and don’t grow as fast or as large. The competition makes the larger trees less disease resistant less able to tolerate drought causing millions of trees to die every year from bark beetle infestations.

An even bigger problem comes now when a forest fire is ignited either by humans or lightning. The fuel load in the forests has become so high with all the thick trees and brush that now when there is a fire it will often burn at such a high intensity that it will incinerate the whole forest. Instead of having light fires that clean up the forest like they once did the thick trees and brush now act like a ladder and carry the flames high into the forest canopy where it kills everything including the big trees. These fires can be so intense that they sometimes bake the forest soil which can leave them impervious to water so precipitation just runs off causing erosion landslides and flooding. This baked soil can also make it more difficult to regenerate a new forest.

Some environmental groups advocate leaving the forests alone to let them burn because fire is a natural part of the forests. The problem with that idea is the forests are out of equilibrium and letting them burn often destroys them. Before we can allow fires to burn in a natural way the excess fuel load must be reduced. In many cases the most economically viable way of doing this is through commercial thinning where the excess trees are removed and utilized for wood products. In this way the sale of the wood products can help cover the enormous cost of restoring the forests. The excess conifers can be utilized to make products like lumber and poles. The hardwoods can be used to make excellent firewood.

Restoring our forests is an area where environmentalists and the forest products industry can work together to solve a problem. We can restore our forests while supplying our communities with jobs and forest products.

Gardens usually reflect their owners in one way or another. An untidy, relaxed person will often have an untidy and relaxed garden, whereas as elegant person who likes everything to be in its place may well opt for a formal garden. Such a garden is usually a positive feature of the home rather than just an outdoor space.

What is a formal garden? Generally, a formal garden is one that has some formal qualities about it. This usually means that the shapes within the garden are geometric. Thus lines tend to be straight or in precise curves, such as a circle, rather than sinuous and informal. Beds are frequently square, rectangular or circular. Sometimes they might even be triangular, but this is an awkward shape in the garden because the corners are difficult to plant as well as being tricky to mow around.

Another aspect of formality is that there is often regular repetition, in other words certain plants or even whole beds may be repeated at regular intervals. This creates symmetry, which is an important part of such gardens. Calmness and tranquility are the qualities that usually sum up the formal garden.

What is sparseness? Formal gardens can contain as much planting as you like, but many rely on relatively few plants set in key positions. Often a round pond set in a graveled area with just a couple of clumps of marginal plants, irises perhaps, and a few water lilies can look quite stunning in its simplicity. Long vistas down paths also create a feeling of calmness.

So, what can we use as formal plants? Any plants may be used in formal gardens, but there are many that are preferred because they have a formality about them either in their natural overall shape or the quality of the leaves. Others, mainly shrubs but also some ground cover plants, lend themselves to being trimmed into formal shapes. Clumps of hostas and irises are valuable because of their leaf shapes, while grasses such as mischanthus or plants such as yucca or cordyline all have their fountain of leaves.

Many ferns also produce this graceful fountain shape. Other plants that work very well in formal gardens are the statuesque ones, such as verbascum. Annuals all of the same height, such as salvias, or in rounded clumps, such as busy Lizzies in a large container, can also contribute to a very formal look.

Containers can often play an extremely important part in a formal garden scheme, especially large ones filled with a single plant. A classic example is agapanthus placed at the entrance to a patio or at the bottom of some steps. Again, plants with a fountain shape, such as yucca or grasses, are ideal subjects for positions such as these. A series of pots set at regular intervals down a path is also a useful device. The pots can contain perennials, annuals, or shrubs, but they should have a neat overall appearance.

Is the maintenance difficult for a formal garden? Compared with many other types of garden, formal gardens are relatively easy to maintain, although at times it is more like housework than gardening. The general design rarely needs changing, so there is little planting unless you are using areas of bedding plants. With good mulching there should be little weeding, so it is mainly down to trimming and keeping the hard surfaces in good order.

Many formal gardens use box hedges to line paths or even to surround beds completely. In really extravagant gardens a series of box hedges are used to create a knot garden. The beds within these hedges may be restricted to one or two plant types, with annual bedding plants often used to paint blocks of color within the green outlines of the box. This type of formal garden is often constructed on a grand scale, but it can be successfully emulated in smaller gardens.

Straight lines and geometric patterns can make a formal garden look very formal. Bedding laid out in lines with a regular repeat of certain plants of colors is one way to add formality to a bed or a whole garden. Sculpture and dramatic containers, even if they do not contain plants, help to give the garden an air of formality. Straight lines, whether they consist of low hedging or bedding plants and geometric shapes can create great clarity of design in a formal scheme.

There are two types of plants that can be used for a formal garden. The first one is good leaves or shape plant. Example of this type of plant is Apapanthus, Crambe, Digitalis and Hosta. The second type is good in fill plant like Ageratum, Diascia, Petunia and Lobelia erinus.

In a large garden that includes a meadow, wild flowers are a wonderful way to add color and interest to an otherwise boring field. In a small garden, leaving a section just for wild flowers ensures both whimsy and constant color.

When planning to fill a large meadow with wild flower seeds, it is important to do some prep work. Scattering seeds on top of an established layer of grasses will reduce the likelihood that the seeds will germinate properly and produce the burst of color you desire. Lawned areas are fine as long as there isn’t an overgrowth of weeds mixed in. If you do have a weed filled area, you will want to remove the plant growth before staring your wild flower seeds.

Once you have eliminated the weeds in the area, you can make plans for what kinds of flowers you want and how long you want to see them. Meadow wild flowers usually bloom through the summer. You can seed in either fall or spring, depending on the types of seeds you chose, the weather in your area, and the state of your land. If you plant in spring you will need to water the plot until the seeds have germinated and the plants are well established.

Fortunately, wild flowers reseed to some degree. You will still need to reseed thin areas of your garden each year, while letting the plants go to seed as well. During the first year you will need to keep an eye out for weeds and cut them down as they grow. After the third year, annual mowing of a wild flower meadow helps it flourish; the debris must be removed. If you are allowed to do so in your area, consider a burn off instead.
