Mediterranean gardens are very popular right now in some of the warmer parts of the United States and they are easy to have built by a professional garden company or to build yourself. It depends on your budgetary restrictions and what your taste is and how much time and effort you are willing to put into making your backyard a Mediterranean paradise.

The Mediterranean influences come from Italy, France, Spain and several other coastal places where the climate is dry and hot enough for various plant life. California is another Mediterranean area in which people have large Mediterranean gardens packed with olives, lavender, citrus and many other plants and flowers found through out the Mediterranean regions.

And the Mediterranean gardens are not only about the plants, although they play a major part in the design, it’s also about the structure of the space. If you have an archway made of brick leading into the garden, this would be a wonderful place to have growing vines and flowers that are native to the Mediterranean area. There are fountains and pathways, walkways, statues and trees all covered with Mediterranean vegetation and rich, thick plant life and flowers. The smell of citrus and olives in addition to the wonderful fragrant flowers make the garden inviting to everyone, perfect for entertaining or just relaxing after a long, hard day.

If you have a pool or a pond or even a fountain, you can build up against it because the Mediterranean flowers and vegetation grows wild near the water for its dry climate needs water to survive. Building up a wall around the pool or pond then planting beautiful flowers that hang down over the mismatched brick wall will bring out the Mediterranean feel for the area in your garden. Building an archway will remind people of the olden places of Italy or Spain in which there are arched walkways every few feet.

If you can not hire a professional garden company to make your Mediterranean garden, then you can look through books at the library or countless sites on the Internet that will give you clean, step by step instructions on how to build a Mediterranean garden by yourself. And you will get exactly what you want in your garden. You will need some patience and a lot of hard work, but it can be done.

If you do hire a garden specialist, make sure you check out their references to be sure their former customers are happy ones. Then ask to see a ‘floor plan’ before they begin their work. You want to know what it will look like before they begin digging and building. Make sure they understand the difference between a Mediterranean garden and a regular flower garden or vegetable garden because you want what you pay for and you want to get what you want.

You may plant your summer garden wisely and beautifully. Mostly the summer garden comprises of pest control to some degree. Your garden not only produces vegetables, fruits, flowers but also attracts the butterflies or birds. Thus, this leads to a average summer garden which is quite beautiful.

The following are the few things to be taken into consideration. You may plant some beautiful flowering plants or summertime vegetables as a pest control with your major plants.
The people living near dryer climate zones may also make their own summer garden with some restrictions due to the climate. You can use the method of low water landscaping and also your own conservation techniques. It doesn’t mean that a garden should be perfectly green with all flowering plants colorfully. This means that your personal vision for your summer garden is going to be quite achievable if you take the time to do the proper research and plan the planting for your summer gardening wisely and with great care. One thing is certain, planting wisely can produce a summer garden that is beautiful and maintains some degree of natural pest control. Your summer garden can produce fruit, vegetables, flowers, and even be designed in order to attract certain birds or butterflies. Of course, your summer garden may also be designed to accomplish more than one of these goals as well. That’s the beauty of the versatility of your average summer garden.

Here are a few things to consider. Versatility in a summer garden means that you aren’t committed to one prevailing purpose or theme. This means that it is not at all inappropriate to plant a few flowering plants or herbs as pest control along with your favorite summertime vegetable offerings. At the same time it is completely acceptable to add a few vegetables that you just can’t seem to live without in your flower garden or amid a the plants in a garden of green.

When it comes to colors, the possibilities of the average summer garden are almost limitless. There are plenty of brightly colored flowers that hallmark the summer season and bring a little splash of color to a world that is often drained of color by the sometimes blinding summer sunshine. By brining a few well placed colors into your garden as a highlight or border you are adding dramatic appeal. If you choose to make your garden a sea of brightly colored flowers, plants, leaves, and vines you can also achieve great affect that may be breathtaking in beauty. Be prepared to spend a great deal of time tending a garden of this nature however as many of the brightly colored flowering plants are attention hogs to some degree.

If you live in a dryer climate you also have the option of using low water landscaping or creative conservation techniques in order to create a garden that is lovely in its own right. A garden doesn’t have to be excessively green or full of bright vividly colored flowers in order to be beautiful. By using landscaping techniques that are conservative in nature you are making your own conservation efforts and the rest of the planet should appreciate not only the effort but also the beauty of the creation that was born of that effort.

If you prefer nice and lush greenery and live in a climate that will accommodate this particular style of a summer garden there is no reason to avoid this either. Be sure to use some conservation efforts though because you never know when drought conditions may present themselves in climates that are typically quite moderate as we are learning in the Midwest this summer.

Vegetable gardens are yet another option when creating your summer garden and another fine example of just how versatile these gardens may be. Keep in mind that many people are discovering the beauty of vertical gardening and hanging plants for a few favorite vegetables and this may be an option if you wish to use limited space wisely and to greater effect.

Another option when it comes to showing the incredible versatility of the summer garden is raised gardening. This is quite literally planting your garden above the ground. Some people create elaborate ‘sand boxes’ of sorts in which the garden is planted. This allows great versatility for those with smaller spaces in which to plant their gardens as well as those who have landscaping issues that are inhospitable for gardening.

These are but a few examples of just how versatile a summer garden may be but I think they provide excellent insight and food for thought for those who are looking for a little something new and different for their summer gardens.

I live in North Florida where we get a good amount of rain, however the ground is mostly sand and therefor does not hold water well. Most of my other plants are heat/drought resistant and do well but I’ve got one spot that’s just the opposite.

This area doesn’t get direct sunlight due to the house overhang and being in a corner, the closest DIREST sunlight is at the stone edging of this 18″ x 30″ spot. There is also a pipe that drips water constantly. Wild briar vines thrive here, but the rose that was orriginally planted died due to too much water. I’m going to remove the old neutriant-poor dirt and replace with horse manure and topsoil to make a very rich soil. I want a plant that’ll fill this space and do well in shade and lots of water. Was thinking ferns but I LOVE flowers. Veggies also okay. Suggestions? Please?

Annual Sweet Pea Lathyrus odoratus gives your garden that simple, old-fashioned touch. A trellis with the single colored white, red, pink, blue or purple gives your garden the perfect early color(s) of choice. Some have picotee edges in a variety of colors, or ruffled blooms which adds an additional texture to your landscape. These 4 to 6-foot vines prefer sun and cool weather, growing from Zones 8 to 1.

Black-eyed Susan Vine Thunbergia alata companions well with the above earlier-blooming sweet peas. This colorful little flower blooms a bright yellow from summer through fall from Zones 12 to 1. The black-eyed Susan vine adds to all your planting areas: climbing your new trellis, cascading over the edge of your planter, or climbing in a hanging basket. They prefer afternoon shade, and will bloom nonstop throughout the season. If full sun gives too much heat, the black-eyed Susans will bloom again once the weather becomes cooler. Just keep them watered during the hot times because they cannot tolerate dry soil.

Planting Annual Sweet Pea for the spring months and then follow with black-eyed Susan vine to continue color from through summer and into fall. The wide variety of colors offered by black-eyed Susan vines include yellow, lavender-pink, peachy-yellow or dark-coral to salmon-pink flowers. These small plants can be wintered over in a sunny room, and/or the seeds are easy to start the next spring.

Bleeding Heart Vine Clerodendrum thomsoniae has ruby red flowers that peep out of their contrasting white calyxes. These will look absolutely phenomenal against a darker-colored trellis. The vine grows 3 to 15 feet long, blooming mid- to late summer. This vine prefers full to part sun, and likes consistent moisture, needing good drainage so that their roots do not sit in water for a long period of time. The bleeding heart vine is hardy in Zones 10 – 12, also growing in Zones 12 to 1, as does the black-eyed Susan vine.

When you are selecting a vine for your trellis, any of the above will be a colorful addition, adding texture and height to your garden. More articles will continue to include other top picks of both annual and perennial vines that will transform your landscape for many years to come.
