Returning home from the war perhaps? the woman could be his mother. War has changed him so much he is no longer a 'young, naive man'.

It makes a lot of sense to me. It graphically portrays the mind and the graphics of a Alzheimer patient, back from the hospital. He struggling with his memory, recapitulating all about his house and yet wanting to attend to pressing things less the memory completely forsakes him. For him, even the spouse waiting in the house is someone hard to remember and that is an indication of his failing faculties. Well written poem.
