Here are some names of shrubs and trees for zone 4 commonly used for screening and privacy:
Siberian Dogwood- Flowering 6 to 8 ft
Shore Juniper
Dwarf lilac- Flowering 6 to 8 ft
Spirea- Flowering 6 to 8 ft
A densely and fairly fast growing hedge shrub/tree is the common laurel. This is an easy to maintain plant, benefiting from an annual prune, and has small white flowers in early summer.
There are some photos of it here – http://www.jparkers.co.uk/images/new_products/HE0025.jpg http://www.fruitipedia.com/English%20laurel%20hedge.jpg The botanical name is Laurel Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia
Otherwise, I would recommend Yew, which is a coniferous evergreen. http://www.hedgesonline.com/images/TallYewHedge.jpg There’s a photo here for amusement, as it’s gigantic and was planted in Tudor times – http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/07_02/yewhedgeDM1807_800x356.jpg The botanical name is Taxus baccata
You could also consider a mix of plants, as sometimes these are more interesting to view.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
