I’m not sure if this is the one your looking for or not. But I’ll take a guess at it anyway. And if I’m wrong, Please forgive me. (I believe it is a Tamarack tree.) Bob.
Being from the east side of the country, but in about the same zone, my first thought was the Larch family…don’t have the Latin for that off hand, but it’s worth looking into.
Probably mimosa or Brazilian pepper. Sounds like maybe a honeysuckle tree, does it have thorns?

Also there are varieties of Japanese Maple that have a fern or feather like leaf.
