Columbines don't need very much fertizilizer. I have some growing in my garden and I use a bit of bone meal on them in the spring and that's it. I just sprinkle the seeds in late summer and they come up every year in fact some grow wild even on the driveway. Maybe you fertilzed too much. I only fertilize once.
